What is Pad Printing?

Pad printing is a versatile printing technique that transfers 2D images or logos from laser-engraved printing plates onto a wide range of surfaces, including 3D objects. The process can be used to print on plastics, metals, glass, and even fabrics. It's a popular choice for industries like automotive, electronics, and consumer goods due to its ability to produce high-quality prints on complex shapes and uneven surfaces.


How Does Pad Printing Work?

The pad printing process involves the following steps:

1.     Plate preparation

The process begins by creating a digital or physical image of the desired design. This image is then etched or engraved onto a photopolymer plate using a laser or photoengraver. This plate serves as the master for the printing process.

 

2.     Ink application

The photopolymer plate is placed under an ink cup containing the desired ink. The ink cup moves away from the plate, exposing the etched image. The tacky ink fills the etched areas of the plate, creating a thin film of ink that corresponds to the desired image.

 

3.     Pad transfer

A soft silicone pad is pressed onto the inked plate, absorbing the ink from the etched areas and picking up the image. The pad is then positioned over the surface to be printed.

 

4.     Image transfer

The pad is pressed onto the surface, transferring the ink image onto the substrate. The ink adheres to the surface, creating a permanent print. The pad is then lifted away, leaving the printed image behind.

 

5.     Drying and curing

The printed surface is allowed to dry. In some cases, the ink may require curing, which is a process of chemically setting the ink to improve its durability and resistance to fading.
